I'm a 66 year old grandpa! Push Me Over The Edge!
My father died of cancer at age 63 after fighting the disease for 2 years. I know how much the hospital's cancer support group helped my dad and me in dealing with this. Over the years I have lost multiple relatives, family and friends to this terrible disease. Neighbors and friends have died leaving a grieving spouses and young children; my 56 year old cousin, who was one of the most outgoing, fun, and likable person you could meet, lost a battle to cancer; long-time clients have passed; family of fellow church members have been lost as have former co-workers.
There have also been survivors due to early detection and new treatments. Wonderful outcomes health wise. But they still shared the same emotional shock and rollercoaster of cancer discovery and dealing with this scary disease. Those who have been touched by cancer know how gut wrenching the cancer diagnosis, treatments and, unfortunately for many of us, death can be. It is hard for the patients, hard for the family and friends, and hard for the survivors. Support is crucial to navigate this path. Family and friend support is vital but only someone who is dealing with this or been through it themselves can truly have any idea of what you are going through. I know from experience how much a support group of those going through what you are going through can help.
My support group was sitting on folding chairs in a circle in a sterile hospital basement that we paid to attend. How much better and supportive if we had had something like Gilda's that was warm and inviting where everyone could feel comfortable to share their fears, concerns and even grief. A place where patients, family, children and friends could network, support, share meals and encourage each other. A place where no one needs to face cancer alone. All at no cost.
I believe in the value of what Gilda's Club offers and delivers to those going through these scary times. I am willing to go off the roof in my support. 14 stories in fact. Please consider supporting Gilda's in what they do by supporting my Over The Edge campaign.
I am rappelling down 14 stories on August 15, 2021 to support families facing cancer through Gilda's Club Madison! Gilda's Club provides free emotional support, cancer education, and hope to children and adults impacted by any kind of cancer. I believe in their mission. Will you help me?
